Cyril Anekstein Cup - Round 2:
HMH vs North London Raiders - Cup Game of the Week
Venue: The Hive
An all Premier Division tie and a mouthwatering game in Round 2 of the Cyril Anekstein. Once again HMH are set to welcome North London Raiders to The Hive following their recent victory 2 weeks ago over Raiders in the league. Raiders are yet to get the better of HMH with the two teams playing each other twice in the last 2 seasons. These games have continually had a lot of goals and we expect no less on Sunday. Raiders will be out for revenge from previous games, however HMH have come back after the break in resilient form with back to back victories of Raiders and Galaxy. This will be close and full of action and goals, but with their recent run of form and home advantage we think HMH will secure a place in the Quarter Final.
MGBSFL Prediction: HMH 3-1 North London Raiders
Oakwood vs Faithfold Blue
Venue: Ark Academy
Oakwood are the team to watch and the team in rampant form in the MGBSFL currently. 3 wins on the trot in the league and most recently beating Faithfold White on Sunday. This Sunday they face the other Faithfold team and we can only see this game heading one way and that is with Oakwood cruising into the Quarter finals of the Anekstein. Faithfold Blue are a strong team and haven't found the consistency they need this season but we expect Oakwood will have too much for them on Sunday. Josh Cuby and Brad Wine are in fine goalscoring form at the moment and it could be a difficult morning to keep them quiet, another all Premier Division tie which will certainly be a game you won't want to miss
MGBSFL Prediction: Oakwood 2-0 Faithfold Blue
Brook Farm Rovers vs North London Galaxy
Venue: Capital City Academy
In one of three clashes between a Division One and Premier Division side this weekend, this may be the most prone to an upset. Brook Farm have shown flashes of what they are capable of this season and despite falling to a defeat last time out against the Bears, they will remain positive after putting in an impressive display. "It’s a cup game which is always exciting, we’ve had some unlucky results in the league so it’s a great chance to take our minds off that and try pull off an upset," said Rovers player-manager Dan Cohen looking ahead to this weekend's game. "We’ve of course played Galaxy last season so we know it’s gonna be incredibly tough but we’re just gonna go for it, have fun playing football and do our best to get the win and progress to the next round Their opponents on Sunday, North London Galaxy have picked up just one win in six league games this season, however they have had many close encounters with several top quality teams this season so they know that the league table does not tell the full story." Luke Lewis’ men have a strong cup history, winning the Barry Goldstein Trophy in their debut season, he emphasised the team's focus on getting through to the next round when speaking ahead of Sunday's game "Only thing on our mind is a win. Strongest squad we’ve had all season. 15 players who’re hungry to get the win. Hoping we get the job done early and come out the traps flying, but we know BFR are a solid team and will have to be at our best to advance." they will be looking to add to their collection this season and they can continue on their quest to do so if they can beat a strong Brook Farm side.
MGBSFL Prediction: Brook Farm Rovers 1-2 North London Galaxy
Hendon United vs Paris Saint-Jewmain
Venue: Hadley FC
The holders of the cup Hendon United will welcome a Paris Saint-Jewmain side who are still on the lookout for their first win since the opening day. Despite this PSJ manager Elio Elia believes his side have a chance of providing a cupset and emulating the success that Hertswood Vale had last season in the Peter Morrison, “We’ve had a tough few weeks results-wise, but are going into the game with a strong squad this time round and with no pressure on the boys. We’re not here to make up the numbers and will aim to give Hendon a real test. My old team Hertswood Vale managed to pull off a cup set last year, so we go in with the belief that we can do the same.” Hendon manager Dave Garcabz was excited to get back into cup action when he spoke ahead of Sunday’s game, “We are looking forward to getting back to CA duty on Sunday. It seems like years ago but we are still the holders of this cup and expect to go on a decent run this year as well. I must admit that the Hendon scouts haven’t seen too much of PSJ so we do go into the match slightly blind, but any match against lower league opposition is a potential banana skin so first and foremost we want to turn up with the right attitude and make sure we get the job done in a professional manner. That said we are heavily depleted this week - Russ Corin amongst many others is injured and unavailable but on the plus side we are delighted to welcome Hendon legend Josh Bentley back into the squad for the first time this season. It is also a great chance for other squad members to put a marker down for their places so overall we will go into the game with confidence and expectations of a good win.” Hendon are coming off the back of a 6-2 victory over Fairlop, they will enter this game full of confidence, I can see this being an uphill battle for PSJ.
MGBSFL Prediction: Hendon United 4-0 PSJ
Temple Fortune vs Maccabi London FC
Venue: Silver Jubilee Park
Sunday will see a matchup between two of the pillar stones of the MGBSFL, Temple Fortune and Maccabi London FC. Both teams are steeped in Jewish football history and success, this season however they have seen differing amounts of success, Temple Fortune are still on the lookout for their first league points of the season, however, they were impressive last time out, completing an incredible comeback over Club De Chigwell, only to have their efforts ruled out by a last-minute penalty. Last Sunday’s performance is sure to give Simon Linden’s men some confidence going forward. Their opponents this Sunday, Maccabi London have been flying this season, they have had a 100% winning start to the season and sit top of the Premier Division. They are the team to beat in this competition and Temple Fortune could be in course for a difficult morning.
MGBSFL Prediction: Temple Fortune 0-4 Maccabi London
Redbridge Jewish Care v West Hendon Wallabies - Division Two Game Of The Week
Redbridge go into this Sunday's game against bottom of the table West Hendon Wallabies full of confidence, having picked up back to back wins for the first time this season. They have turned their season around since the lockdown break, and will be wanting to keep up the momentum going into the festive break.
A win on Sunday would lift the boys from Essex up to third in the table, and put them in a great position going into the second half of the season.
It has been a season to forget so far for West Hendon Wallabies, who are still winless with just one point from the opening five league games. However, a spirited performance last Sunday against undefeated new boys NWL Azzurri will give them great confidence going into this game.
We spoke to Redbridge Jewish Care manager David Castle prior to Sunday's game, "We're excited for Sunday and are looking to make it three wins from three going into the New Year. We know that it won't be an easy game so we will need to be at our best. We are in good form going into this game scoring 11 goals in the last two games, if we can continue scoring goals and manage to keep them out at the other end I will be very pleased!"
We can see plenty of goals in this one, but think the home side will come out on top. Home win.
MGBSFL Prediction: Redbridge Jewish Care 4-2 West Hendon Wallabies
