Cyril Anekstein Trophy Round 1:

Fairlop vs Redbridge - Cyril Anekstein Cup Game Of The Week

This was the game everyone was interested in when the cup draw was completed a few weeks ago! This is a huge game which has brought a lot of excitement in previous years to the MGBSFL. This clash may look different to a few years back with Fairlop pushing on and establishing themselves as a premier division contender whilst Redbridge have struggled so far this season in Division 2. However this is a cup game and there is a huge amount at stake to see who will win the battle of Essex. We expect Redbridge to come out firing on all cylinders here but given the quality of Fairlop and their good start to the season we would be surprised if we see an early cup upset in this game but anything can happen in the cup!

MGBSFL Prediction: Fairlop 2-0 Redbridge

Ray Parlour's Prediction: Fairlop Win

NWL Azzuri vs Faithfold Green - Cyril Anekstein Cup Game Of The Week

Could this be a potential cupset this Sunday? Division Two new boys NWL Azzurri have taken the league by storm, with fifteen goals in two games, they go into Sunday’s game with real confidence.

NWL Azzurri Manager Spencer Saffer said, “Looking forward to testing the squad against Division 1 opposition. Injuries and local lockdowns leaves us without 4 key players. We'd love to squeeze through this game and test our strongest 11 against the best in latter rounds.

Faithfold Green have only played one game so far this season, and will hope that they can pick up their first win against much fancied NWL Azzurri.

MGBSFL Prediction: NWL Azzuri 4-2 Faithfold Green

Ray Parlour's Prediction: Faithfold Win

Stoke Salmon vs Oakwood - Cyril Anekstein Cup Game Of The Week

If there was going to be a cupset this weekend, this might be the game for it. Stoke Salmon have taken to life in the MGBSFL like a duck to water, with three wins out of three and scoring a massive SIXTEEN goals.

The Salmon will fancy their chances this Sunday against a winless Oakwood team.“Absolutely massive game this weekend. The boys are really looking forward to a tough test against very very good opposition. We know this is going to be the hardest game in the clubs short history and we’re very excited to see where we are at.We’ve heard Oakwood are extremely confident and didn’t even know who Stoke Salmon F.C. were when the tie was announced.

My sources tell me that a lot of their players replied ‘who have we got in the next round then’ when they saw the draw for this round. It’s time for the Salmons  to show what they are really capable of.We’ve been training hard and after a long break off the pitch we can’t wait for that first whistle.

Team news: Harry Landy has finally found his passport so can make the trip over from Leeds and will be in the squad. Skipper Louie Greenham looks set for an extended absence after receiving not so great news from the doctors. We are all absolutely gutted but he’ll be #BackStronger as long as he stays away from the Tamo Treats (rest of you should try them though they’re delicious).

Finally some positive news on the injury front, D.Flax looks set to make his Salmons competitive debut, and we are all buzzing about it, the timing couldn’t be better after Schinds picked up a shoulder injury which will see him on the sidelines for a few weeks.22 for training last week, 22 for training this week, the squad is buzzing and we all love football. Everyone hoping for a Cupset #COYS”

Oakwood haven’t had the best start to their season, with no win from two games and scoring just two goals, they’ll be wanting to make amends this Sunday in the cup.

They were finalists two years ago losing out to Hendon in a close fought final, and will be aiming to go all the way this season.

We caught up with Oakwood manager Lewis Blitz before Sunday's crunch cup tie, "We’re not taking anything for granted this Sunday. We will be up against a very tough opposition who will have aspirations to go the distance in the cup. We’ll need to turn up and put in 110% effort to get a result. We believe we have a really strong squad that is capable of achieving great things, but the pressure is on us to show that this Sunday and really kickstart our season."

MGBSFL Prediction: Stoke Salmon 4-3 Oakwood

Ray Parlour's Prediction: Oakwood Win

HMH vs West Hendon Wallabies

Venue: The Hive

West Hendon Wallabies have certainly brought excitement to the MGBSFL this season! the three games they have been involved in have had an incredible 24 goals in those games! however with the Wallabies being on the receiving end of 14 of those goals and HMH leading the way this season in the Premier Division we would expect this to be a tough morning for West Hendon Wallabies. If HMH show the quality they have done so far this season, beating the likes of Hendon 5-0 and Faithfold Blue 7-0, we dare to think what scoreline this game might potentially produce, but HMH will know the Wallabies have nothing to lose in this game and will certainly be up for the fight to challenge themselves against one of the top sides in the MGBSFL. We are struggling to find any reason for an upset here and predicting a comfortable home win.

MGBSFL Prediction: HMH 5-0 West Hendon Wallabies

Maccabi London FC vs Scrabble

Venue: Rowley Lane

We can't see an upset on the cards here unfortunately for Scrabble! We have said every week Rowley Lane is one of the toughest places to travel to in the MGBSFL and we are standing by that this week. Scrabble are coming off the back of two heavy defeats in Division 2 and given MLFC's 100% record so far in the Premier Division we fear for Scrabble in a game where we could see double figures for MLFC. We are certain MLFC won't want to go in to this game thinking the job is done, but it is hard to see anything but an MLFC win. As with all cup games, they bring some surprising results but if MLFC keep on producing performances as they have done this season this will be a comfortable morning at Rowley Lane.

MGBSFL Prediction: Maccabi London FC 5-0 Scrabble

Jewdinese vs Straw Hat Pirates

Venue: St James High School

Another Premier Division v Division 2 clash and unfortunately for Division 2 and Straw Hat Pirates, We can only see a Jewdinese win happening in this game. Jewdinese will come into this game really positive following a recent victory over Faithfold white and we fear that given Jewdinese's strength high up the pitch with Reiss Mogilner, Zack Collins and Zach Brin that they will have too much for Straw Hat Pirates who currently sit bottom of Division 2.

MGBSFL Prediction: Jewdinese 3-0 Straw Hat Pirates

Borussia Barnet vs Faithfold White

Venue: Bridgestone Arena

Despite a division separating the two sides, Borussia Barnet will go into Sunday’s clash with Faithfold White with some real confidence that they can get a result. Barnet have won all their games so far this season and have looked very impressive with their start to Division One, whilst their opponents are looking for their first win and goal of the season, after drawing blanks in their opening two fixtures. There is clearly quality within the Faithfold White side and they will be hoping for some improvement this Sunday.

MGBSFL Prediction: Borussia Barnet 2-1 Faithfold White

Club de Chigwell vs Brook Farm Rovers

Venue: Seven Kings School

In the first of a double header of cup and league matchups between the two sides, Club de Chigwell welcome Brook Farm Rovers to Essex in search of their first win of the season. Sharpness could be an issue for a Brook Farm side that haven’t played in 5 weeks and have played just one game all season so far, however they did look impressive in their solo outing narrowly missing out taking home a point against a high flying Borussia Barnet side. “It’s going to be tough to start up again but we’re ready for a consistent run of fixtures now,” said Rovers manager Dan Cohen. “We were unlucky not to nick a point against Borussia Barnet in our only game so far but a slow start cost us so we know what we need to do better this weekend and going forward.” Cohen went onto mention the impact of facing a team two weeks in a row “Two games in a row against an Essex team we’ve never faced and don’t know much about but we’ll go into it all guns blazing and hope to progress to the next round with our first win of the season.”

MGBSFL Prediction: Club de Chigwell 1-2 Brook Farm Rovers

Hertswood Vale vs London Bears

Venue: Moatfield

Hertswood Vale will go into Sunday’s fixture looking to get their first win of the season after drawing their opening two fixtures. They face fellow Division One side London Bears for the first time in a competitive fixture, however the sides have met in friendlies on three occasions with the Bears coming out on top in each occasion. Despite this, Bears’ manager James Harpin believes Vale are the favourites heading into Sunday’s game, “We know that this game will be different and I'd put them down as favourites. We are going to have to perform extremely well to get a result. I am looking for a good cup run this season and hopefully this is where we can start. We have limited numbers this week but with the 11 we have we are confident we have enough to get a result.” We will await to see if this is Harpin trying to play some pre match mindgames.

His opposing manager Jacob Emanuel has spoken of his club’s record in the cup in the build up to Sunday’s tie “Cyril Anekstein isn't a cup we've notoriously done well in. In fact, I think we've been knocked out in the 1st round for the past 4 years. As such, I'll be setting the boys a challenge to see if we can progress to round 2 this year! It's been an unfortunate stop start season but we're keen to kick on with a full fixture list ahead of us. We warmed up for this week's game with a friendly win against Spec, which served as an excellent fitness test and boost for the squad.” Emanuel began to wax lyrical about James Harpin’s side, “We face a London Bears side that we haven't beaten yet, albeit we haven't faced them in a competitive fixture. I've got a lot of time for James Harpin and the Bears squad, they're a brilliant team with great potential and it will Sunday be a very tough game.”

Team News: Adam Zaidman, James Neidle and Harry Marlow are all set to return for Vale, whilst Zach Mandel, Dan Reuben and Tony Gold could make their first appearances of the season .The Bears will be without a big portion of their squad, after several of their players have got stuck at Covid-stricken universities.

MGBSFL Prediction: Hertswood Vale 3-0 London Bears

East London Bees vs Temple Fortune

Venue: Epping Upper Clapton Rugby Club

The East London Bees are set to make their Cyril Anekstein debut this Sunday, when they come against Temple Fortune, one of the longest running teams in the MGBSFL. “We are missing quite a few players due to quarantine/injury and other commitments but we still hope to put on a good performance against a team in the division above.” The Bees manager James Lewis continued by emphasising the importance that his side bounce back after their defeat last time out, “We were disappointed with the football we played in our last game and we would have liked to get straight back out there but the enforced 2 week break has made us even more determined to turn our performance around.”

Former Fortune favourite Liam Stein will go up against his former side this Sunday after making the move this summer, Fortune manager Simon Linden spoke about their awaited reunion this ”Will be great to see Liam Stein, he is missed by the large Fortune fan base.” Linden then went on to focus on Sunday’s clash “Good to get back to action, I’m looking forward to a competitive match after 2 friendlies. We need a win, I’m expecting a tough game in Essex.” Fortune will be desperate to get their first win of the season but they know the Bees will be no pushovers despite the division separating the two sides, a cupset could be on the cards.

MGBSFL Prediction: East London Bees 1-2 Temple Fortune

Hampstead Ducks vs FC Team

Hampstead Ducks head into this Sunday’s cup game with confidence after a 2-0 league win against FC East London Bees before the break.  They’ll want to keep up their good form and make sure they don’t exit the Anekstein at the first hurdle.

“The last time the Ducks met FC Team was in the semi final of the David Wolfe cup, where we played out an exciting 1-1 draw, ending up in a defeat on penalties. It was very much a different world back then; the final game before Covid lockdown and before the summer transformation of the Ducks. With that in mind, the Ducks are beyond excited to be facing up once again to FC Team. Buoyed by our first win of the season before the break, we are looking forward to a great game, and will be hoping to defeat them on Sunday.”

FC Team have had a near perfect start to the season, undefeated with 7 points from their opening three games. Only a win will do for them this Sunday as they sent sites on a cup run.

MGBSFL Prediction: Hampstead Ducks 2-4 FC Team

SPEC vs North London Raiders

SPEC come into Sunday’s game off the back of a 5-0 loss, and will be aiming to make amends with a Cupset against Premier Division opposition in North London Raiders. SPEC manager Ricky Lawrence ahead of this weekend's game said "We know Sunday will be a very, very tough game. There has to be an upset somewhere though, so hopefully it'll be us!"

North London Raiders will fancy their chances this Sunday, however they know that they can’t be complacent against an experienced team like SPEC.

MGBSFL Prediction: SPEC 1-5 North London Raiders

Premier Division:

Faithfold Blue vs North London Galaxy

We really like the look of this game, and had it not have been the Cyril Anekstein Cup fixtures this could've easily been a game of the week in the Premier Division. Faithfold Blue come into this game having conceded 7 goals against HMH recently and they will be looking to get back to basics and find the form from the opening game that secured them a 3-0 victory over their Faithfold counterpart. We are yet to see much of North London Galaxy this season, however following a fantastic draw on the opening day against Oakwood they will be looking to start putting some results on the board and climbing the league. This will be a close game, but we are going for an away win here, If Galaxy can find their flow and get an early goal then we can see them hurting Faithfold Blue, but it is definitely not a slam dunk!

MGBSFL Prediction: Faithfold Blue 1-2 North London Galaxy

Division 1:

Mill Hill Dons vs Paris St Jewmain

Venue: Brunel University

The Mill Hill Dons and PSJ meet once again after facing off last month, in which the Dons came out victorious. PSJ enjoyed some bright spells in the game but were unable to create enough clear cut opportunities to challenge Sam Singer in goal. PSJ manager Elio Elia spoke of how he is content to be facing the Dons once again in quick succession “Our last game league against MH Dons was only a few weeks ago and despite a tight affair, ended in defeat. Playing them again so soon is a great opportunity for us to put things right and bounce back. I'm expecting a big reaction from the boys on this one.” PSJ will be on the lookout for their first win since the opening day.

The Dons should be happy with their start to the season, they know they can take advantage of other teams not playing and move inside the top 3 with a win on Sunday. Their manager Brandon Hammé was keen to guard against complacency heading into Sunday’s game, “I am not expecting an easy game come Sunday, they are going to be hungry and desperate to get a result after last time out. In that game you could see that they have players of real quality, when it clicks for them they could cause some teams in this division some difficulties. We head into this game knowing that we can get all three points but we know we need to keep to our principles that have seen us get success so far, if we are not at our best we leave the door open. A win moves us at least up to third, that would be a real signal of intent and the boys are determined to make that happen”.

MGBSFL Prediction: Mill Hill Dons 2-1 Paris Saint-Jewmain
